Ramu attack: Bandarban chairman held

Detectives today detained an upazila parishad chairman of Bandarban district for his alleged link with the 2012 attack on Buddhist temples at Ramu in Cox's Bazar.

Tofail Ahmed, chairman of Naikhyanchhari upazila, was detained on "specific allegations", Sanjit Kumar Banik, superintendent of police in Bandarban told our local correspondent.

He was detained from Rajarmath area of Bandarban town around 2:00pm, he said.

Earlier, Tofail appeared before a local court and then he met Bir Bahadur U Shwe Sing, state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs.

As he came out of the minister's house, a team of Detective Branch of police picked him up and took him to their office for interrogation, the SP added.
