Projonmo League leader held for stripping doctor
Police yesterday arrested a local Projonmo League leader on charge of taking video of a doctor after stripping him for blackmailing in Sherpur upazila of the district.
They also seized at least 10 crude bombs and two sharp weapons from his possession.
The arrestee is Zakir Hossain, 28, president of the upazila unit of Projonmo League, and son of Abdul Gaffar of Dublagari area in the upazila town.
Victim Dr Amirul Hossain Chowdhury, 53, associate professor of Sirajganj Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College, runs a clinic in Sherpur town colony area.
On March 14 this year, Zakir along with his cohorts called the doctor to a shed in the upazila and took a video after stripping him, said Gaziur Rahman, senior assistant superintendent of police (B circle and Media).
The gang then demanded Tk 5 lakh from the victim, a resident of Bonikpara in the town, who later paid them Tk 50 thousand and the rest was given through a cheque.
Following the incident, the doctor filed a case against three identified and eight to nine unidentified people with Sherpur Police Station on March 16.
On secret information, a police team raided Banikpara in the town early yesterday and arrested Zakir in the case, said the ASP.
Another case was filed against the arrestee under arms and explosives acts, he said.
Contacted, Abdus Sattar of the upazila unit of Awami League, said the arrestee was self-declared president of Projonmo League and he had no connection with his party and its wings.
