Prisoner allegedly dies by suicide in Cox’s Bazar jail

A prisoner has reportedly died by suicide at Cox's Bazar District Jail.

The deceased, Mostafa (25) of Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila, had been in prison since November 18 after being arrested in a case filed over a clash, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent quoting Nesar Ahmad, superintendent of the prison.

The incident took place around 7:00pm this evening when Mostafa was found hanging in the prison cell.

He was rushed to the emergency unit of Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival, the prison official said.

Shaheen Md Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, resident medical officer of the hospital, also confirmed the matter.

Earlier on Sunday, a Cox's Bazar court had granted a one-day remand to Mostafa in a case, Nesar Ahmad also said.

The body of the deceased has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
