Polls violence leaves 27 hurt in 2 districts

At least 27 people were injured in pre-UP polls violence in Jessore Sadar upazila and Kachua upazila of Chandpur yesterday and on Saturday night.

Our Benapole correspondent reported that the supporters of Awami League and BNP nominated chairman candidates clashed in Lebutala union under Jessore Sadar upazila on Saturday night, leaving at least 15 people from both sides injured.

Officer-in-Charge Illias Hossain of Kotwali Police Station said the supporters of AL candidate Alimuzaman and BNP candidate Mustafa Monwar swooped on each other while they were campaigning in the union around 11:00pm.

Voting in the union is scheduled to be held on March 31.

Away in Chandpur, at least 12 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League at Rahimanagar Bazar in Kachua upazila of the district yesterday, reports our correspondent.

Of the injured, Amir Hossain, incumbent chairman of Gohait (South) union, and Jubo League activists Titu and Fakhrul received treatment at a local hospital.

Witnesses said the clash ensued following an altercation between incumbent chairman Amir Hossain and local AL leader Shahriar Shahin over choosing a candidate for the post of chairman of the union in the upcoming election.

At one stage, the two rival groups attacked each other, leaving 12 people from both sides injured.
