One to die, 5 others get life for killing farmer

A Rangpur court yesterday sentenced a man to death and five others to life term imprisonment for killing a farmer in Pirgachha upazila of the district in 2007.

The death sentence awardee is Md Hasan Ali, 40, of Zilia village in Pirgachha upazila, while the lifers are Hanif Mia, Raju Mia, Salam Mia, Shahidul Islam and Rehana Begum.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Abu Zafar Md Quamruzzaman pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom in presence of the accused.

According to the prosecution, the convicts stabbed Md Kashem Ali to death on July 23 in 2007 over previous enmity.

Later, Shamsul Alam, elder brother of the victim, filed a murder case with Pirgachha Police Station, accusing 10 people.

Four accused of the case were acquitted as the court found them innocent, said Additional Public Prosecutor Farukh Mohammad Reazul Karim.
