Newlywed girl strangled, husband, in-laws detained

A newly married girl was strangled allegedly by her husband and in-laws on Alia Madrasa road of Mymensingh town early  yesterday.

The victim, Minara Begum Nipa, 20, daughter of Dulal Uddin of the town's Charpara area, was a diploma engineer from Mymensingh Polytechnic Institute.

Quoting family sources, Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said, following romantic affair, Nipa got married with Mohidul Islam Shakib, 22, an electric worker and son of Akkas Ali of Alia Madrasa area, five months ago.

Though Nipa's family accepted the marriage, Shakib's family did not accept Nipa, resulting in a serious family dispute since their marriage.

"There was an altercation between Nipa and her in-laws at around 1:30am. At one stage, Shakib and his parents allegedly strangled Nipa," the OC quoted family members as saying.

Later, Nipa's husband and in-laws took her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where the doctors dclared her dead. There was injury marks around the neck of the victim, the OC said.

Police sent the body to MMCH morgue for autopsy.

Police detained Nipa's husband Shakib, his father Akkas Ali and mother Mahmuda Begum from the hospital.

They were taken to the Kotwali Police Station for interrogation.

Victim's father lodged a murder case with Kotwali Police Station in the afternoon, accusing the three detainees, police said.

Protesting the killing, local people put a up barricade in Charpara area  for half an hour at around 11:00am.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
