Motorbike lifter shot in 'shootout'

An alleged motorbike lifter sustained bullet injuries during a 'shootout' with the law enforcers at Purba Kalia village under Debhata upazila of the district early yesterday.

The injured, Alamgir Hossain, 38, son of Abdul Majid Sarder of Ujirpur village, was taken to Debhata Upazila Health Complex.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamal Hossain of Debhata Police Station said a police team took position at the village at around 3:30am following information that a gang of motorbike lifters was coming to the area after stealing a motorcycle.

As police waylaid a motorbike, three people, including Alamgir, who were riding the motorbike, blasted bombs and opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.

Alamgir received bullets while the rest two managed to flee. He was taken to Debhata Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
