Modhumati devours two schools

Classes suspended for over a week

The authorities of two schools in Modukhali upazila have been compelled to suspend classes as erosion by the River Modhumati devoured the schoolbuildings.

Of the institutions, Goasharpur Government Primary School was established in 1923 while Goasharpur-Bokshipur High School in 1973 on the western side of the riverbank at Goasharpur village in Kamarkhali union.

Manoranjan Biswas, headmaster of Goasharpur-Bokshipur High School, said classes were suspended since the schoolbuilding went into the river on August 23.

Earlier, they removed all furniture from the school, he said, adding that Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Lutfun Nahar was informed about the matter.

SM Wahiduzzaman, headmaster of Goasharpur Government Primary School, said they suspended classes seven days ago due to the river erosion.

The UNO said earlier, they informed the authorities concerned to save the schoolbuidlings from the river erosion.

Sultan Mahamud, executive engineer of Water Development Board in Faridpur, said as they have no project in the area, they do not do any work there.

District Primary Education Officer Shivpadho Dey said the authoirtes were asked to find a new place for the school and in this regrad, they would provide all kinds of cooperation.

The river also devoured six villages in the union, said the locals.
