UP member shot dead in Gopalganj

A union parishad (UP) member was shot dead near Gopinathpur High School area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Saturday evening.

The victim Hamidul Sharif, 45, son of late Abdul Haque Sahrif of Gopinathpur village, was a member of Ward No-7 of Gopinathpur Union Parishad, Officer in Charge (OC Investigation) of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Hazrat Ali said.

Quoting locals, the police official said two masked criminals on a motorbike intercepted Hamidul's rickshaw near Gopinathpur High School around 7:30pm while he was returning home after closing down his shop.

The miscreants opened fire on Hamidul and fled the scene, leaving him severely injured, added the OC.

Hearing screams, local people rescued bullet-hit Hamidul in critical condition and took him to Gopalganj General Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead, he said, adding that he was shot four times in his chest.

Meanwhile, police detained rickshaw-puller Sagar for interrogation.

Gopinathpur Union Parishad Chairman Sharif Aminul Haque said Hamidul was a good man and he had no feud with any one.

Gopalganj Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Sanowar Hossain said they were trying to find out the motive behind the killing and conducting drives to arrest the culprits.
