Medicine trader hacked to death in Rangpur

A medicine trader was hacked to death by unidentified criminals at Chaity Intersection in Kaunia upazila of the district on Tuesday night.

The deceased is Rahmat Ali, 55, of Moskur village in the upazila.

Police quoted victim's family members as saying that a gang of criminals waylaid Rahmat, also former president of Tapa Modhupur union unit of Juba League, while he was returning home from his drugstore near the intersection around 11:30pm.

They hacked Rahmat with sharp weapons, leaving him dead on the spot.

On information, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Rahmat might have been killed over previous enmity, Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam of Kaunia Police Station said.

Police detained two people, Shahidul Islam, 35, and Morshed Ali, 32, of the village for their alleged involvement in the killing.

No case was filed in connection with the murder as of 4:00pm yesterday.
