Man killed over land dispute

A man was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups over a land dispute at Nayasree village under Srimangal upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Jarif Miah, 45. He died on the spot.

The injured were admitted to Srimangal Upazila Health Complex and Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital. 

Police quoted locals as saying that two groups of Nayasree village-- one led by Sufian Ahmed and the other by Lokman Miah--locked in an altercation over the disputed land in the morning.

At one stage, the rival groups equipped with lethal weapons swooped on each other, leaving Jarif dead and 10 others from both sides injured.

Being informed, police went to the spot and dispersed the clashing groups, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer in-charge of Srimangal Police Station.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident, the OC added.
