Man to die for killing wife for dowry
A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry at Lemshikhali village under Kutubdia upazila of the district in 2011.
The convict is Mohammad Shawkat, son of late Abdul Monaf of the village.
Judge Md Sadiqul Islam of the District and Sessions Judge's Court delivered the verdict in presence of the convict.
According to the prosecution, Daisy Akhtar, daughter of late Nurul Amin of the village, was married off to Shawkat in January 2011. Shawkat had been putting pressure on Daisy to bring dowry from her parents since their marriage.
On May 20, 2011, Shawkat locked in an altercation with his wife over the issue. At one stage, he beat up her slit the throat with a sharp knife and later dumped the body at a nearby salt field.
Locals spotted Daisy's body at the field on the following and informed the police. They caught Shawkat while he was fleeing the area and handed him over to the police.
Victim's mother Minu Ara Begum filed a murder case with Kutubdia Police Station, accusing Shawkat on May 22.
