Main accused in Pabna ASI murder case held

Police arrested the main accused in ASI Sujaul Islam murder case in Ishwardi upazila at midnight on Wednesday.

The arrestee, Md Koyel, 32, son of late Shahjahan of Merinpara village in the upazila, who sustained bullet-injuries is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Orthopaedic Hospital (Pongu Hospital).

Biman Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said according to the confessional statement of the other arrestees, police raided the village and detained Koyel.

Around 3:00am, police took Koyel near the Pakshey embankment to recover hidden arms. Sensing the presence of the police team, Koyel's cohorts opened fire on the law enforcers prompting them to retaliate.

Police said Koyel and Constable Saidul Islam were injured by bullets during the gunfight. Police rushed them to Pabna General Hospital from where Koyel was shifted to Dhaka, the OC added.

Police also seized a revolver and four bullets from the spot.

Assistant sub-inspector Md Sujaul Islam was killed on October 5. Later, his body was recovered from a turmeric field near Pakshey rail station.

Sub-Inspector Rezaul Islam of Pakshey Police Camp filed a case with Ishwardi Police Station the following day, accusing some unnamed criminals.

Police arrested four suspected criminals-- Khokon Hossain, 32, Jani Pramanik, 21, Masud Rana, 25, and Md Setu, 25, of Pakshey village, raiding different areas since the murder incident occurred.

Police arrested Koyel, following information grilled from the four, the OC added.
