Low lying areas in 4 dists submerged
The water level of several rivers has crossed the danger level, engulfing low-lying areas in Barisal, Barguna and Bhola while riverside villages in Pirojpur have got flooded due to tidal surges.
According to Water Development Board (WDB), the Kirtonkhola River at Sadar point is flowing 4 centimetres, Meghna River at Elisha point 1 metre and Meghna River at Daulatkhan point 46 cm above the danger marks, reports our Barisal correspondent.
Most of the rivers in south region were flowing above the danger level for the last one week, said sources at WDB.
Due to overflowing of the rivers, Syestabad and Charbaria areas got flooded during the period, said the chairman of Barisal Sadar Upazila Parishad.
Meanwhile, the Bishkhali River at Pathargata point was flowing 48 cm, Khakdon River at Barguna point 27 cm and Payra River at Amtali point .06 metre above the danger levels yesterday, said Sahidul Islam, executive officer of WDB in Barguna.
People of Elisha, Tajumddin and Daulatkhan of Bhola and Carbaria under Barisal Sadar upazila and Ulania under Mehendiganj upazila are the worst sufferers due to overflowing of rivers, said an engineer of Barisal WDB.
They are preparing a project profile to build embankments on the rivers, mitigating the sufferings of the villagers, he said.
In Pirojpur, people on both sides of the rivers Kacha, Baleshwar and Sandha in different upazilas of the district are passing their days in misery as tidal water has inundated the areas, reports our correspondent.
The areas are Sadar, Zianagar, Bhandaria, Kawkhali and some parts of Mathbaria upazilas, reports our correspondent.
During a visit to some villages of Sadar and Zianagar upazilas yesterday, this correspondent found the houses of the area covered with tidal water.
The villagers said when tidal comes, their houses get flooded two times within 24 hours.
Away in Manikganj, three people died from snakebite in the flood-affected areas of Sadar upazila in the last two days.
