Libya barred on security grounds: Minister

The government is not allowing Bangladeshi migrants to go to the North African country of Libya due to security reasons, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam said today.

"We want to ensure safety for our people abroad. So, our government remains alert to avoid any unwanted situation regarding our migrant workers," he said while addressing a seminar on "Irregular Labour Migration in Bangladesh: Crises and Ways forward," organised by Manusher Jonno Foundation at Dhaka's Cirdap auditorium.

Jobseekers fall victims to fraudulence and cheating as they try to go abroad through illegal channels, the minister added.

The government is committed to ensuring safe migration so that no one faces any exploitation.

Senior Secretary to the Home Ministry Mozammel Haque Khan spoke as the special guest while Manusher Jonno Foundation Executive Director Shaheen Anam chaired the programme.
