A Supreme Court lawyer today sent a legal notice to the Election Commission (EC) requesting it to stop the process for holding election to Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) in 24 hours.

Advocate Mohammad Ali Zinnah served the notice on behalf of Abdul Matin, a former administrator of Siddirganj Pourasava in Narayanganj, saying that the schedule for NCC election was declared despite a petition regarding separation of Siddirganj municipality from NCC is pending with the High Court.

Zinnah told reporters that the NCC election was held on May 31, 2011 after the then Naryanganj, Siddirganj and Bandar Kadamrasul municipalities were brought under NCC through issuing a gazette notification.

Abdul Matin had filed a writ petition with the HC seeking an order to separate Siddirganj municipality from NCC in 2013.

The HC then issued a rule over the issue, he said adding that the rule is now pending with an HC bench for its disposal.

In these circumstances, the chief election commissioner has been asked to withdraw, cancel or suspend the election schedule in 24 hours after getting this notice.

At the same time, the local government secretary has been asked to take measures to stop the elections otherwise legal action will be taken, Zinnah added.
