Lalmonirhat, Feni, Meherpur freed this day in '71
Today is December 6. On this day in 1971, freedom fighters freed Lalmonirhat, Feni and Meherpur districts from the occupation of Pakistani forces.
Our Lalmonirhat correspondent reported that, instructed by the commander of sector No 6 Wing Commander Khademul Bashar to free Lalmonirhat, several groups of freedom fighters launched attacks on the Pakistani soldiers at strategic points of the district on December 3.
On the night of December 4, some 55 Pakistani soldiers surrendered to the freedom fighters at Botrish Hazari and Kulaghat villages while about one thousand Pakistani soldiers were picked-up on December 5.
At dawn on December 6, the freedom fighters declared the then sub-division Lalmonirhat free and flew the national flag in the town.
Our Feni correspondent adds: the district was freed from the Pakistani occupation forces on December 6 in 1971.
On the night of December 5, valiant freedom fighters drove the Pakistan army and freed the district.
To mark the occasion, district administration with the help of two educational institutions will arrange a flag rally at the Zero Point of the town today.
BSS adds: Liberation War records suggest that Sector 8 Commander the then Major MA Manzoor led the allied forces to Meherpur on December 5. The entire region was freed on the next day, 10 days before the final victory against the Pakistani troops.
District Commander of Freedom Fighters' Command Council Bashir Ahmed said the liberation of Meherpur was much important as the country's first capital was situated in Mujibnagar of Meherpur.
