Kulaura upazila declared free from child marriage

Kulaura has been declared as the first upazila in Moulvibazar district to be free from child marriage.

The announcement was made at a meeting in Kulaura in the town on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Kamrul Hasan was present at the programme as chief guest. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tahsina Begum, among other government officials, was present.

The officials at the meeting declared that no child marriage will take place in the upazila and strict action will be taken if anyone tries to arrange a child marriage in the upazila. They declared the upazila to be a pioneer in achieving a child marriage free Bangladesh.

The DC said child marriage is a curse. It has a bad impact on population growth and women's health, and also causes the untimely death of women. Everybody should unite to remove the curse of child marriage in order to build a peaceful society.

Officials and people from different unions and villages of the upazila took an oath to prevent child marriage at the programme.

Away in Lalmonirhat, a schoolgirl was saved from child marriage following the timely intervention of members of Bandhu Sanggatan, a local social platform, at the remote village of Kumrirhat in Aditmari upazila of the district on Sunday, reports our correspondent.

Marriage of sixth grader Moslema Khatun, 11, daughter of Mashiur Rahman of the village, was arranged at night.

Being informed, a few members of Bandhu Sanggatan, led by its president Mahbubur Rahman Babu, rushed to the spot and foiled the marriage.
