Kibria murder: Ex-SCC mayor Ariful gets bail

The High Court today granted bail to suspended Sylhet City Corporation mayor and BNP leader Ariful Haque Chowdhury in a bomb blast case, clearing the way for his walk out of jail.

The case was filed under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908 in connection with the killing of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria.

The bench of Justice Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order of bail after hearing an appeal filed by Ariful seeking bail in the case, Md Bashirullah, Deputy Attorney General (DAG), told The Daily Star.

He said the government will move a petition before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the HC order of bail.

If the HC order reaches the jail authorities before the apex court passes any order on the government's stay petition, Ariful will get released from jail, the DAG added.

The then opposition lawmaker and Awami League (AL) leader Kibria and four others including his nephew Shah Manzur Huda were killed in a grenade attack on a rally in Habiganj on January 27, 2005.

Two cases- one for killing and the other for blasting bombs, were filed in connection with the incident of murder. 

Earlier on September 6, Ariful got bail from the HC in the murder case.
