HC moves for bail of 7 serving jail for 12yrs

The High Court today issued a rule asking the government to explain why seven under-trial prisoners who are in jail for more than 12 years should not be granted bail.

The court also directed authorities concerned of Kashimpur jail to produce them before the court on January 24 next year for hearing their statements.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan came up with the order and rule following a report broadcast by private television Channel 24 on December 9.

According to the report, the seven under-trial prisoners have been languishing in jail for more than 12 years in separate cases filed against them.

There is little progress in the trial proceedings of the cases at the lower court concerned, the report said.
