HC asks to produce 4 accused serving jail without trial

The High Court today directed jail authorities to produce four prisoners, who have been serving jail without trial for over 16 years, before the court on December 4.
The prisoners -- Chan Mia, Mokbul, Sentu and Billal (full names were not known) -- are now in Kashimpur jail in connection with separate criminal and murder cases.
Of them, Chan Mia has been serving in prison for 18 years, Billal for 17 years and Mokbul and Sentu for 16 years.
The court asked the government to explain on December 4 as to why the four prisoners should not be granted bail in the cases.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan also directed the authorities concerned of the lower court to produce record and documents of the cases before it on the same day.
The HC bench passed the suo moto rule and the order following a report on the four broadcasted by private television Channel 24 on November 16.
The HC order came after another murder accused Shipon, who was imprisoned for about 17 years without any trial, was released from Kashimpur jail on November 15.
