Star Online Report

The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court order that had granted bail to suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan in a corruption case clearing the way of his walk out of jail.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed a leave to appeal petition filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) against the HC bail order.

Mannan's lawyer advocate M Masud told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar to his client's release from jail following the apex court order.

Earlier on August 16 this year, the High Court granted bail to Mannan in this case.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Joydevpur Police Station in Gazipur on June 13 this year against Mannan over irregularities in spending money in relief and welfare funds of the city corporation.

According to the case statement, the relief and welfare funds of Tk 1.3 crore and Tk 90.87 lakh was spent in between 2013 and 2015. There were irregularities in spending the money as the mayor did not maintain any bank transaction.

Mannan was shown arrested in the case on June 19.
