Criminals slit the throat of a college girl in Delduar upazila under the district after failing to rape her yesterday.

The victim, 18, daughter of a poor day labourer of Phultara village, and a second year student of Nallapara Abul Hossain College, was admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital in a serious condition.

Four or five people led by Solaiman waylaid the girl and tried to rape her at a jute field of Phultara village when she was returning from college around 3:00pm, police quoted the injured girl as saying.

When the girl started screaming, the criminals stabbed her on the throat and several other spots with a sickle and left her there.

Locals took the badly injured girl to Delduar Upazila Health Complex from where she was shifted to the intensive care unit of Tangail Medical college Hospital.

Informed, Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Delduar Police Station, and teachers of the college rushed to the hospital to see the girl.

The girl belongs to a poor family and her relative, also a teacher of Nallapara College, arranged her study there, said Saber Ali, a relative of the girl.

The girl is a good student and the college authorities took responsibility of her study, said Abdus Salam, a member of the college governing body.

He demanded exemplary punishment of the criminals who brutally tortured the girl.

"Earlier Solaiman teased the girl on her way to college several times. We have also got the names of other culprits and they will be arrested soon," OC Mosharaf Hossain said after visiting the victim at the hospital.
