Elephants kill one, damage crops in Jamalpur

Wild elephants killed a man and injured another at Satanipara village in Bakshiganj upazila of the district early yesterday.

The deceased is Saju Mia, 30, son of Idris Ali of the village.

The injured, Khokon Mia, 25, of the same village, is now undergoing treatment at Bakshiganj Upazila Health Complex.

The incident occurred when a herd of 20/25 elephants came to the village from adjacent Garo Hills in search of food around 12:00am.

At one stage, the elephants attacked the villagers when they tried to drive them away from their croplands, killing Saju on the spot and Khokon injured, Officer-in-Charge Aslam Hossain of Bakshiganj Police Station said.

The elephants also destroyed crops on several acres of land, said Nazrul Islam, a member of Kamalpur union parishad.
