Fire at Gazipur electronics factory brought under control

The fire that broke out at the electronics factory of Minister Refrigerator in Dhirasram area of Gazipur was brought under control after seven hours of frantic efforts by the firefighters.

The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the six-storey building around 7:15am and was brought under control around 2:00pm, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting Mamunur Rashid, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Gazipur.

On information, 18 units of fire-fighters from different fire service stations in the area rushed to the spot and were trying to douse the fire until last reported around 2:15pm.  

The fire quickly spread to the 4th and 5th floor of the six-storey warehouse of the electronics factory, but reason behind the fire and further details could not be known immediately, Mamunur said.

No causality has so far been reported and it was not immediately clear if anyone was trapped inside the building, the fire official said.

The fire fighters were facing difficulties as combustible materials were stocked inside the building, he said.

Besides, there were no sufficient fire safety measures in the building, he added.

The fire originated from the fifth floor where they used to store manufactured electronic products, Md Rafikul Islam, deputy managing director of Minister Hightech Park Ltd, said.

After inspecting the scene, Md Motaleb Mia, deputy inspector general of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, told reporters that there is no rule of keeping warehouse on the fifth floor or above of a building.  

A seven-member probe committee headed by additional district magistrate was formed to find the cause behind the fire incident, Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur SM Tarikul Islam said.
