Eight people were injured, four of them critically, when a Dhaka-bound train hit a sand-laden truck at Jhaoil level crossing near Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj yesterday afternoon.

The injured were admitted to hospitals in Sirajganj and Dhaka, police and locals said.

Md Hyder Ali, sub-inspector (SI) of Sirajganj GRP, said Dhaka-bound Drutajan Express from Dinajpur hit the truck at the crossing at around 3:40pm.

There is no rail gate so there is no gateman at the level crossing, although there is a road, the SI said.

Md Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge Highway Police Station, said GRP personnel along with a team from Bangabandhu Bridge West Zone police camp rescued the victims from the spot.
