Don’t show Mannan arrested except warrant: HC

Star Online Report

The High Court today ordered the law enforcers not to show MA Mannan, suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, arrested in any case without arrest warrant.

In response to a writ petition, the court also asked police not to arrest BNP leader Mannan from jail gate without any arrest warrant in a case after his release from jail.

The HC issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why showing Mannan arrested in a new case after he gets bail in another case should not be declared illegal.

The bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Mannan seeking its directive on the government not to show him arrested in any case without arrest warrant.

Petitioner's lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain told The Daily Star that his client has got bail in 26 cases from the High Court and Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

The police have showed him arrested in a new case after he got bail in another case, which was violation of his fundamental rights, he said, adding that Mannan was recently shown arrested in a case filed in 2014 after the Appellate Division upheld a High Court order of his bail in a corruption case.
