Ctg Double murder in 2014: HC summons additional metropolitan session’s judge over delay of trial

The High Court today summoned the additional metropolitan sessions judge concerned of Chattogram to appear before it on January 12 next year to explain why the trial proceedings of a double murder case were not concluded in the last six years.

The additional metropolitan session judge has been ordered to appear before the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman along with the relevant documents of the case.

The bench came up with the order while hearing a petition filed by Md Monir, a detainee accused in the case, seeking bail.

Citing the case statement and bail petition, Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi told The Daily Star that a women was raped and strangled to death in the residential hotel Akash at Majhirgat area in Chattogram on May 4, 2014. One Habib was killed in the same incident.

A case was filed with Kotwali police station the following day in connection with the killings.

Police arrested Md Monir on June 1, 2014 in connection with the case. He gave a confessional statement to the judicial magistrate concerned involving other accused -- Bablu, Belal, Khorshed, Bacha, Bahar, Zahir and Habib, who was also killed.

During hearing Monir's bail petition, the HC bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim on October 23, 2017 directed the lower court concerned to finish the trial proceedings of the case in six months on the available documents and evidence.

As the trial court did not finish the trial, the HC on October 2, 2018 sought explanation from it in this regard.

On November 29, 2019 the HC bench again ordered the trial court concerned to conclude the trial proceedings by March 31, 2019.

Accused Monir's lawyer Md Shahidul Islam today moved another petition before the HC bench seeking bail for Monir.
