Cops arrest fugitive Netrokona war crimes accused

Police today arrested a fugitive war crime accused from Atpara Upazila of Netrakona, eight month after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 issued an arrest warrant against him.

Enayet Ullah Manju, 70, was arrested from his home in Kulshree village under the upazila around 6:00pm, Faruque Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Atpara Police Station told The Daily Star.

Prosecutor Sabina Yesmin Khan Munni also confirmed his arrest.

Tribunal on February 8 issued arrest warrant against Enayet, his brother Hedayet Ullah Anju, 80, and Sohrab Fakir, 88, of their village, following a prosecution petition.

Of them, Sohrab is now in jail while Anju is on the run.

The investigation agency of the tribunal on September 8 said to have found evidence of their alleged crimes including genocide, killing, abduction, torture, looting, arson and deportation in six incidents during the Liberation War in 1917.

Hedayet was a Jamaat-e-Islami leader while the others were its activists in 1971.

All the three accused first joined local Peace Committees and later Razakar Bahini, an auxiliary force of the then Pakistani occupation army, according to the agency.

Hedayet contested in the Pakistan Nation Election in 1970 with Jamaat ticket but was defeated.
