Bangabandhu sculpture damaged in Kushtia: How the vandals were arrested
Police arrested four people in connection with damaging the under-construction sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Panch Rasta intersection in Kushtia town on Friday night.
Of the arrestees, two are students and two are teachers of Ibne Mas-Ud Qawmi Madrasa, SM Tanvir Arafat, superintendent of police in Kushtia, said in a press release this afternoon.
The two students -- Abu Bakr and Abu Nahid -- directly took part in damaging the sculpture while the two teachers -- Amin Hossain and Yusuf Ali -- were instigating them to do that, he said.
The SP said police identified the two vandals by scrutinising footage from CCTV cameras installed at the intersection.
In the CCTV footage, it was seen that two people climbed the scaffolding set around the under-construction sculpture at 2:16am and indiscriminately smashed the sculpture with iron rods. Within just a few minutes, they were seen leaving the scene after damaging the sculpture.
Based on the CCTV footage, police started drives and found the culprits within 24 hours, reports our Kushtia correspondent quoting police.
Police said they first arrested two brothers, Abdur Rahman and Abdullah, who are also students of the madrasa, from Moshan Bazar area of Mirpur upazila based on a mobile phone call. Following information from them, police raided the madrasa on Saturday evening.
As the suspected vandals were not found in the madrasa, police spoke to the madrasa authorities and arrested the two teachers -- Amin Hossain and Yusuf Ali.
During interrogation, the two teachers gave information about the two students, who damaged the sculpture.
Police later arrested Nahid from Philipnagar Golibaria area in Daulatpur upazila and Bakr from Shingpur in Mirpur upazila early today.
