Baby elephant rescued from well in Garo Hills
Officials with the help of locals rescued a baby elephant from an old well in the Garo Hills in Jhinaigati upazila under Sherpur district yesterday.
The calf, separated from its herd, had fallen into the well in the early morning near the Garo Hills at Gurucharon Dudhoni village in Jhinaigati upazila, said locals and forest department officials.
After failed attempt to the rescue it, villagers informed forest department and fire service officials in Sherpur.
Teams from the two departments went to the spot and arranged digging to increase the diameter of the well.
Then they threw a strong rope on the calf.
The calf clasped the rope around its body with its trunk and the rescue workers with the help of villagers pulled out the baby elephant from the well after trying for two and a half hours, said Md Mostafizur Rahman, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence office in Sherpur.
Afterwards, the unharmed calf ran towards the forest, said Md Ashraful Islam, an official of Tawkucha forest office.
A herd of around fifty elephants continued roaming around in the Garo Hills for quite a long time. The calf possibly got detached from the herd and fell into the well at night, he said.
