ACC director suspended for leaking probe report

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has suspended one of its directors for allegedly leaking a probe report to a Deputy Inspector General of Police in exchange of bribe.

ACC Director Khandaker Enamul Basir has been suspended for breaching the rules of service of the commission, said a press release of the anti-corruption watchdog.

Basir allegedly leaked a probe report to DIG Mizanur Rahman, who is accused of earning wealth through illegal means.

ATN news, a private TV channel, yesterday aired a report that DIG Mizanur Rahman gave Tk 40 lakh bribe to an enquiry officer of the commission for exonerating the police official of all charges against him.

Taking the report into account, the ACC formed a probe body headed its Secretary Muhammad Delwar Bakht and asked it to submit a report to the commission by 3:00pm today.

Based on findings of the report, the ACC suspended Basir for leaking information and breaching rules of service of the commission, the press release said.

ACC began the probe against DIG Mizan in May last year.

Mizan came under the spotlight in January last year when allegations arose that he forcibly married and tortured a woman.

He was soon withdrawn from his post at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

On April 25 last year, the anti-graft watchdog summoned DIG Mizan, as multiple media reports and other sources reported that he had amassed wealth illegally.

He was also accused of picking up a 25-year-old woman in July 2017 and forcibly marrying her, and abducting a female news presenter of a private television channel at gunpoint in December of the same year.
