9 jailed for life in Manik Saha murder case

A speedy tribunal in Khulna today sentenced nine people to life term imprisonment in a case filed for killing Manik Saha, a reporter of the daily Sangbad, who died in a bomb attack near press club on January 15, 2004.

The life term sentence awardees are: Bulbul, Akram, Ali Akbar, Nuruzzaman alias Sumon, Sarwar, Mithun, Sattar alias Disco Sattar, Ballal, and Shawkat Hossain Saka.       
Judge M A Rob Howlader of the court announced the verdict in presence of five accused, reports our Khulna correspondent.
Another six accused in the case are on the run.
The court also acquitted two other accused in the murder case as allegations brought against them were not proved.
The trial started in June 2008.
Three among the 14 accused were killed in "a gunfight" with law enforcers, four were sent to jail, while the others are absconding.
Manik Saha, former president of the press club, also worked for the English daily New Age, Ekushey TV and the BBC.
