800 sued over clash at Pabna polling centre

At least 800 people have been sued over Saturday's clash at a polling centre in Chatmohar upazila that killed a man.

Md Alamgir Hossain, presiding officer of Bahadurpur Government Primary School centre in Mothurapur union, filed the case with Chatmohar Police Station for attacking polling centre, trying to loot ballot boxes, vandalizing vehicles of law enforcers and creating violence at the centre to halt government activities on Saturday night, said Subroto Kumar, officer-in-charge of the police station.  

Emdadul Hossain, 60, of the village, was killed in a clash between locals and BGB personnel near the centre around 7:00pm when vote counting was going on.

According to police, irked by the delay in publishing polls results, a group of locals started hurling brickbats at BGB men, and also vandalised a vehicle.

The BGB men opened fire to disperse the angry mob.

At one stage, Emdadul, who went to the centre to know the results, was hit by bullets and died on the spot, said the OC.

In Dinajpur, election of Rampur and Polashbari union parishads in Parbatipur upazila of the district has been postponed for territorial dispute, reports our correspondent.

 Election was scheduled to be held on May 7 in 10 UPs in the upazila, said Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman, upazila nirbahi officer. 

He received a letter through a fax yesterday afternoon regarding the issue from Bangladesh Election Commission, said the UNO.
