55-year-old rapes mentally challenged girl

A 10-year-old mentally challenged girl, raped by a 55-year-old man at Baoitara village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila, is undergoing treatment at Sirajganj General Hospital.

 Police arrested the alleged rapist, Md Shukur Ali, son of Nidan Ali of Baoitara village, on Sunday night and sent him to jail yesterday, following a court order.

"When I was working in a nearby handloom, leaving my mentally challenged girl alone at the house, neighbour Shukur took her to his house on Saturday noon and raped her. With serious injuries, my daughter was admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital," said Arjina Begum, mother of the victim.

The victim sustained serious injuries apparently due to rape and she will require surgery, said Dr Sohely Momotaz, on-duty doctor of gynaecology department of Sirajganj General Hospital.

"The victim's mother filed a case against Shukur Ali on Sunday afternoon and the police arrested him from his house at night. The victim was taken for medical examination today [Monday]," said Basudeb Sinha, officer in charge of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station.
