4 killed in Sitalakhya boat capsize

A boat carrying at least 20 people capsized today in Sitalakhya River at Taraganj in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur leaving at least four people including a woman dead.

Three of the deceased were identified as Atiq, 25, Tazin Khan, 28, Kohinur, 25, while the identity of another man could not be known immediately, said Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Kapasia Police Station.

Six Fire Service and Civil Defence divers from Dhaka with the help of locals recovered the bodies, Md. Akhteruzzaman, deputy assistant director of fire service, told The Daily Star.

The boat, carrying passengers from Shibganj of Narshingdi, capsized near Taraganj Kheya Ghat in Kapasia around 6:00pm, the OC said.

Just after the capsize, some passengers along with two children managed to reach at the river bank, witnesses said.
