3 Sirajganj JMB men on remand

The Judicial Magistrate's Court in Sirajganj granted five days' remand for three operatives of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) when police produced them before the court yesterday.

They are Sirajganj JMB chief Md Joynal Abedin, his son Borhan Uddin and JMB's toll collector Abu Bakar Siddique, said Md Waheduzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sirajganj DB police.

Sirajganj DB police arrested Joynal Abedin, 55, and his two sons Borhan uddin, 28, and Imran Ali, 26, of Erandah village, and Abu Bakar Siddique, 55, of Gandhail village under Kazipur upazila of the district on Tuesday from Jamiatul Quran Cadet Madrasa in Erandah.

Police seized one kilogram of gunpowder, 10 crude bombs, large amount of bomb making materials and several religiously inciting books from the spot. A case was filed against them under crime prevention act on Tuesday night.

"The arrestees were produced before the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court seeking seven days' remand for each. After hearing, the court granted five days' remand," the DB OC said. Imran Ali has agreed to give confessional statement to the court, he added.

Jamiatul Quran Cadet Madrasa was established approximately two years ago. Borhan ran the madrasa where the JMB operatives used to hold their organisational activities. The madrasa was closed after their arrest, said Md Abu Eusuf, additional superintendent of police in Sirajganj.

Ullapara Upazila Education Officer Md Shafikul Islam said they were not concerned about the madrasa because it was privately run.
