3 mechanised boats destroyed; 5,000 metres of fishing nets seized from Halda River

Around 5,000 metres of illegal fishing nets were seized and three mechanised boats engaged in sand lifting were destroyed in Halda River today.

The local administration led by Ruhul Amin, upazila nirbahi officer of Hathazari upazila, conducted the drive between 10:00am and 4:00pm. They seized the illegal fishing nets and destroyed the boats.

Ruhul Amin told The Daily Star that Halda is preparing for spawning of carp as March-April is the season for the brood fish to lay eggs.

"It is during this time when miscreants lay the trap to net brood fish. As part of protecting the fish, we seized the nets and destroyed the three boats," he said.
