3 fishermen punished for defying ban

Three fishermen were jailed for 15 days for defying ban on catching hilsa in the Padma river at Pachuria village in Alfadanga upazila of the district yesterday.

The convicts are Mannan Mollah, 55, Chan Mia, 50, and   Saheb Sheikh, 45, of the village in the upazila.

A mobile court, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Abul Khaire, punished the fishermen in the morning. 

Government imposed a 22-day ban on catching hilsa starting from October 12 to help smooth breeding and growth of the popular fish, said the UNO.
