2 held with 4.5kg gold while smuggling to India
Two alleged smugglers were arrested with 4.5kg gold from a bus in Jashore this evening.
Acting on a tip-off, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) raided a Benapole-bound bus of Fame Paribahan on Jashore-Magura highway in Bahadurpur Bazar area and arrested two smugglers, said Lt Col Selim Reza, captain of 49 BGB Battalion.
After searching them, the BGB men found 13 gold bars hidden in sandals, he said.
The value of the seized gold was Tk 3.17 crore, he told our Benapole correspondent.
The arrestees are Akter Hossain Mandal (30) of Baliakandi and Hossain Mizi (38) of.
They confessed to the BGB that they have been smuggling gold to India for a long time. In return they were paid Tk 3,000 per bar. However, the BGB is continuing its efforts to arrest the original owner of the gold, the BGB official said.
A case has been filed against the duo with Jashore Kotwali Police Station, he added.
