2 UP chairman aspirants' men clash in Bagerhat
A clash between the supporters of two union parishad (UP) chairman candidates left two people injured in Morrelganj upazila under Bagerhat district yesterday while miscreants attacked the house of a UP chairman aspirant in Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong Friday night.
Men of ruling Awami League backed candidate Ilias Hossain and independent candidate Rezaul Islam engaged in a clash at Gobindapur village in Hoglapasha union of Morrelganj upazila, leaving Alauddin Sheikh, a supporter of Ilias, and Rafiqul Islam of the opponent group injured, reports our Bagerhat correspondent.
Rafiqul was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital while Alauddin received treatment at a local clinic.
A motorcycle left by a supporter of Ilias was burnt during the incident.
Both the UP candidates blamed their opponents for the clash that occurred in front of the house of Rezaul.
Policemen have been deployed as a tense situation is prevailing in the area, said Md Rashedul Alam, officer in charge of Morrelganj Police Station.
Our Staff Correspondent from Ctg adds: The residence of a BNP-backed UP chairman candidate at Dakkhin Fedainagar village in Sitakunda upazila under the district came under attack on Friday night.
"Some 30 to 40 people attacked our house at Dakkhin Fedainagar village at about 10:00pm on Friday," said Ohidul Islam Chowdhury Sharif, a member of Sitakunda upazila unit of BNP, and chairman candidate of Baroiar Dala UP.
"The miscreants hurled stones, brickbats and cocktails and opened fired from outside the boundary wall of the house. They told our guard that our family will fall into miseries if my nomination paper is not withdrawn," said Sharif.
They also beat up of earth cutting workers staying in our house and snatched money and mobile phones from them, he said.
Officer in Charge of Sitakunda Police Station Iftekhar Hasan said, "After receiving the information of trouble, a police team visited the spot. We have heard that some youths scuffled with the workers staying at the house."
"No incident of cocktail blast and gunshot was reported and we are yet to get any written complaint in this regard," he said.
