12 fishermen arrested for illegal fishing in Sundarbans

Forest officials arrested 12 fishermen for fishing in the sanctuary in West Sundarbans under Satkhira range on Tuesday night.

Members of Sundarbans Smart Patrol team and Pushpakathi Forest Patrol team, in a drive at Mandarbaria sanctuary in the Malancha River under Compartment No-54, also seized two mechanised trawlers, two boats, fishing hooks and nets. 

The detained are Md Hafizur Rahman, Babu Sheikh, Mintoo Sheikh, Md Sohel Rana, Kabir Sheikh, and Rabiul Islam Sheikh of Bagerhat district; Md Khalil, Monirul Islam and Shamim Khalifa of Pirojpur, and Md Riasat Ali Jawaddar, Ameer Ali and Ayub Ali of Satkhira district.

Shahjahan Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pushpakathi Forest Patrol Outpost under Satkhira Range, said they raided the area and made the arrest at around 9:00pm on Tuesday.

The detainees were yesterday produced before the court that sent them to prison.

The OC also filed a case against them under the Forest Act.
