10 injured as rival Sramik League men clash
At least 10 people were injured, four of them with bullets, in a clash between two factions of Sramik League in Chatiyani area of the district town on Friday night.
Police said there was a longstanding conflict between Abdul Hakim Malitha, general secretary of the district unit of Sramik League, and Sheikh Alal, another leader of the unit, over capturing tender of Water Development Board.
As a sequel to the conflict, the men of the two rival groups attacked each other with firearms at 7:30pm, leaving 10 people from both sides injured, said Md Abdullah Al Hasan, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
Of them, Abdul Hakim Malitha, 48, Alim Malitha, 42, Dolon Malitha, 30, Lalu Sheikh, 35, and Rejaul Karim, 30, were admitted to Pabna General Hospital with serious wounds.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said the OC.
Away in Jamalpur, a Jubo League chief of the district has been suspended on charge of violating party discipline, reports our correspondent.
The suspended leader is Shahriar Ujjal, president of the district unit of Jubo League.
On Friday night, Ujjal allegedly assaulted Shahin Ahmed, general secretary of ward No 4 unit of Awami League in Jamalpur municipality following an altercation over December 30 municipality elections in Bakultola area.
Following the incident, the district unit Jubo League yesterday suspended Ujjal, said Nayeem Rahman, general secretary of the unit.
