Recovery of Tk 80 lakh: DIG Partha denied bail again

Star Online Report

A Dhaka court today again rejected a bail petition of Partha Gopal Banik, deputy inspector general (prisons) of Sylhet division, in connection with a case filed over the recovery of Tk 80 lakh from his residence in Dhaka.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Senior Special Judge’s Court of Dhaka issued the order after his lawyer submitted a petition seeking bail in the case.

The court also directed the investigation officer to submit by October 28 the probe report of the case.

Earlier on July 29, the same court rejected his bail petition and sent to jail after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) produced the DIG before it and appealed to the court to confine him in jail until the investigation is completed.

Before his arrest, ACC Director Mohammad Yousuf quizzed Partha over allegations that he committed irregularities and corruption as DIG (prisons) of Chattogram division.

After interrogation, ACC team accompanied by Partha went to his Green Road residence and recovered the money.

They later detained him and showed him arrested after the case was filed by ACC Assistant Director Md Salauddin against Partha with ACC’s Integrated District Office in Dhaka.

On October 26 last year, Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a jailer of Chattogram Central Jail, Sohel Rana Biswas, and recovered Tk 44 lakh in cash, documents showing fixed deposit accounts worth Tk 2.5 crore, and cheques of Tk 1.3 crore issued in favour of him, and 12 bottles of Phensedyl.

Sohel was going to his hometown in Mymensingh by train from Chattogram.

At that time, Partha was DIG (prisons) of Chattogram division, and Prasanta Gopal Banik was senior jail super of Chattogram Central Jail.
