A youth was stabbed to death by unknown assailants in Dhaka's Bakshibazar area this afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Nayan (20), a motorcycle mechanic by profession.

His friend and witness to the incident, Sohan, said they went to Hossaini Dalan area to see the programme of Holy Ashura.

"After visiting the site, we took a rickshaw from Bakshibazar to go to Lalbagh. On our way, some youths waylaid the rickshaw and stabbed Nayan indiscriminately around 1:00pm, leaving him critically injured," Sohan said, adding the attackers immediately fled the scene.

Nayan was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Sohan claimed that the attackers were wearing black clothes normally worn by Ashura celebrators.

Sohan was taken to police custody for interrogation. The body was kept at the mortuary for autopsy, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the hospital's police outpost.

Moudud Hawlader, officer-in-charge of Chawk Bazar Police Station, said they are following the incident and working on arresting the killers.
