Women councillor aspirants of Dhaka pledge security
Women councillor contenders for Dhaka north and south city corporations polls have pledged to ensure security for women and set up day care centres for infants, if voted to power.
Eminent personalities, on the other hand, urged them not to forget slum dwellers and to ensure that women get easy access to the councillors.
A roundtable styled "Thoughts of Women Councillor Candidates in Resolving Local Problems" was organised yesterday by the daily Prothom Alo at its office in the capital where three women aspirants and a representative of another councillor aspirant were present.
Mentioning miserable condition of women at slums, Prof Kaberi Gayen of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University said, "While conducting a survey we found one latrine for 70 women while one kitchen for 40 women."
Councillor candidate for ward no-12 of Dhaka South City Corporation Runu Aktar said, "Female garment workers face several problems while returning home at night. I will solve this problem."
Candidate for ward no-16 of Dhaka North City Corporation Mahmuda Begum said she will form a team with locals to monitor areas near schools to protect schoolgirls from stalking.
Katie Croake, deputy chief of Democracy International, expressed disappointment at low participation of women in the upcoming city corporation polls. Prof Zarina Rahman Khan of Public Administration of Dhaka University also spoke.
