Upazila chairmen may join union parishad poll campaigns: EC

The Election Commission is going to allow upazila parishad chairmen to participate in election campaigns in the upcoming union parishad elections.

Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz told the news agency yesterday that it would not be wise to keep them out as many were grassroots leaders of political parties.

Following the recent amendment to the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009 to hold election to only the chairman post of each union parishad under party line, the EC is now changing the election rules and the code of conduct.

However, the proposed code of conduct for elections to union parishads, set to begin at March's end, will be finalised at the EC's meeting tomorrow and subsequently be sent to the law ministry for vetting.
