Transport workers go on strike in all Ctg districts
Chittagong regional committee of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation postponed its indefinite strike till 4:00pm today hours after it enforced the shutdown in the five districts of greater Chittagong from 6:00pm yesterday demanding rescue of its "abducted" leader.
The decision came after law enforcers at a meeting last night assured them of rescuing the leader within today, said Mohammad Musa, president of the federation.
Nurul Islam, general secretary of Chittagong City Human Hauler Workers' Union, was allegedly abducted by some miscreants from the city's Bandartila around 10:00pm on Wednesday.
His brother lodged a general diary with EPZ Police Station in this regard.
As police are yet to trace his whereabouts, they called for the strike in Chittagong, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari and Cox's Bazar, said Musa.
Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam, however, said they tracked the mobile phone of Nurul which showed his location in the city's Saltgola.
But the incident seemed to him mysterious as Nurul himself made a phone call to his brother to inform about his abduction, Kalam said.
Neither his family members nor any transport leader contacted them after filing the GD, he said, adding, "We are conducting drives to rescue him."
