The returning officer (RO) of Chittagong City Corporation election Md Abdul Baten yesterday asked Chittagong Metropolitan Police to transfer Mainul Islam Bhuiyan, the officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station, within 24 hours for not complying with an order of the election office.
"We asked the CMP commissioner to transfer Khulshi OC... give the charge to an honest, competent and neutral officer at the police station," said the RO. "We also asked the commissioner not to entrust him with any duty of CCC polls."
The OC did no take any measures regarding the attack on women during a campaign on behalf of a councilor candidate of ward 13 on April 16, the RO added.
The OC also did not give any response to the letter of the election office issued to him in this regard, he said, adding that as a result it seemed that it was not possible for him to play a fair and neutral role during the polls.
Supporters of pro-Awami League councillor candidate Mohammad Hossain Hiron allegedly assaulted the campaigners of his rival candidate Mohammad Mahfuzul Alam on April 16 while the latter were campaigning in Wireless area. Five to six women, including the wife of the Mahfuzul, were injured.   In response to a complaint, the RO asked Khulshi police to take necessary steps within two working days regarding the attack on the same day and submit a report on the steps in this regard.
Meanwhile, councillor candidate Abdur Rouf of ward 16 in CCC was fined Tk 5,000 on Tuesday for violating the electoral code of conduct in campaigning.
The candidate was carrying posters pasted on his motorbike in Chawkbazar, said Executive Magistrate Ruhul Amin, who penalised Rouf.
