A section of teachers of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) yesterday reiterated their demand for resignation of the vice chancellor accusing him of committing corruption in recruitments, practising nepotism, and misbehaving with colleagues.

The teachers under the banner of "Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Brindo" also faxed a letter to the education minister in this regard.

On April 13, three teachers went to the VC to discuss the distribution of classrooms but he did not give them enough time and instead had an altercation, said the protesters. Terming it an insult, 35 department heads resigned from their posts demanding VC's resignation.

Later, the VC, Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, sent letters to 28 of them to rejoin their posts which the demonstrating teachers termed in the letter another insult to their seven fellow teachers.

Moreover, the teachers claimed that the education minister at a meeting last Thursday assured them of reducing the VC's power. Then how did the VC circulate a recruitment advertisement on Wednesday for a lecturer post at the food and tea department? asked the teachers, adding that this time he insulted the minister.

But the VC told The Daily Star that the education minister during a meeting last Friday did not tell him anything regarding reducing his power. On August 4, the VC sent a letter to the minister seeking guidelines to overcome the ongoing crisis.

President of the platform Prof Shamsul Alam said, "We will continue our programme until the VC resigns."
